People arrive at NLP from different directions. Some are curious. Some are sceptical. Some have already tried a course that didn’t deliver. Whatever brought you here, this page gives you straight answers — no hype, no jargon, no promises that sound too good to be true.
These are the NLP questions I’ve been asked most often across over thirty years of 1:1 NLP training and executive coaching. Each answer is brief and direct. Where a topic runs deeper, you’ll find links to full Q&A guides, free technique libraries, and video resources. Start wherever you are.

What Are the Core Foundations & Free Resources?
The starting point. What NLP actually is, how to learn it, what to read, and where to access free tools without spending a penny.
What is NLP?
NLP is a practical framework for understanding how your thinking patterns, internal language, and habitual behaviours shape your results — and how to deliberately adjust them when they’re not working. It’s not theory for theory’s sake; it’s an operating system for how you run your own mind.

Is NLP easy or hard to learn?
The core concepts — pattern recognition, rapport, state management — are straightforward. Most people pick them up quickly. The real challenge isn’t learning the tools; it’s applying them consistently when you’re under pressure, tired, or triggered. That’s where most courses fail you: they teach the technique but not the discipline. Mastery comes from real-world reps, not memorising textbook definitions.

How long does NLP take to learn?
That depends on what you mean by “learn.” You can grasp the core models in a weekend seminar and leave with a certificate. But integrating NLP so it changes how you actually think, communicate, and perform under pressure? That takes months of deliberate practice with real feedback. A weekend gives you vocabulary. Sustained 1:1 training gives you capability. They’re not the same thing — and the industry rarely makes that distinction.

What are the best NLP books to read?
Most NLP books fall into two camps: dense foundational texts written for academics, or modern guides that over-promise and under-deliver. The ones worth your time focus on clear models, linguistic precision, and practical application in business or coaching — not vague inspiration. We’ve filtered the shelf for you.

What Do Practitioner Levels & Certifications Mean?
NLP certification can mean everything or nothing — depending on who trained you and what they actually taught. Here’s how to read the landscape.
What is NLP Certification?
NLP is an unregulated field. There’s no government body, no single authority, no universal standard. Certification reflects the standards set by independent associations or established master trainers — and the quality varies enormously. A certificate from a weekend seminar and a certificate from months of intensive 1:1 training carry the same title but not the same weight. What matters: your trainer’s real-world commercial experience, the amount of live feedback you received, and the depth of practice that went into the qualification.

What is an NLP Practitioner?
A certified Practitioner has completed foundational training — typically 60 to 120 hours — covering the core toolkit: anchoring, sensory acuity, reframing, perceptual positions, and foundational language models such as the Meta Model. Think of it as fluency in the grammar of change. You can recognise patterns, understand what’s happening in a conversation, and begin to shift your own responses and those of others with precision.

What is an NLP Master Practitioner?
A Master Practitioner works beyond individual techniques. At this level, you’re addressing complex belief systems, value hierarchies, advanced language patterns, and behavioural modelling — the ability to decode how top performers do what they do and replicate it systematically. It’s the difference between playing individual notes and composing music.

What are other NLP certifications?
In addition to Practitioner and Master Practitioner, I offer two specialist certifications for certified Master Practitioners ready to apply NLP at a higher level:
NLP Coach Practitioner — for those who want to start or scale a coaching practice, or run a coaching team within a company. This builds directly on Master Practitioner foundations and focuses on real-world coaching delivery, not classroom theory.
NLP Business Practitioner — for those who want to start or scale their own business, or run a key team or division within a company. This is applied NLP in commercial environments: leadership, strategy, and measurable outcomes.
Both are certified through my practice and delivered 1:1 worldwide.
How much does NLP training typically cost?
A breakdown of typical price ranges — from large seminar formats to tailored 1:1 executive coaching — and how to measure practical return on investment rather than just counting hours on a certificate.

Does NLP Really Work, and What Are the Common Myths?
NLP attracts strong opinions — some earned, some inherited from bad marketing. Here’s a straightforward look at what holds up and what doesn’t.
Does NLP really work?
An honest assessment: NLP delivers reliable, measurable results in communication, state management, and shifting stuck patterns of thinking and behaviour. It falls down when trainers promise miracle cures or treat it as a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s not magic. It’s a set of tools — and like any tool, its usefulness depends entirely on who’s holding it and how much they’ve practised.

Is NLP scientifically proven?
The uncomfortable truth: NLP was never designed as a single testable therapy — it’s a methodology that modelled excellence across multiple disciplines. Some individual components (anchoring, reframing, goal-setting structures) align with well-established research in cognitive behavioural science and performance psychology. Others haven’t been rigorously tested. That doesn’t mean they don’t work; it means the evidence base is uneven. What I can tell you after thirty years: the tools that survive real-world pressure are the ones worth learning — peer-reviewed or not.

Is NLP a type of hypnosis?
No. However, we explore hypnosis — the two share some history. NLP modelled Milton Erickson’s language patterns to understand how subtle conversational pacing and framing can bypass conscious resistance and create openness to change.
That’s one thread in NLP’s design, not the whole fabric. You will, however, explore trance states; you’ll learn how language works beneath the surface of everyday conversation — and how to use that awareness deliberately.
What about “NLP mind control”?
Mind control is a marketing myth — usually pushed by people selling “dark NLP” courses to those who want shortcuts to manipulation. The reality is less cinematic and more useful: NLP focuses on self-management (running your own mind effectively) and ethical influence (communicating with enough precision that others actually understand and engage with what you’re saying). Will it improve your influence? Yes — significantly. But influence isn’t control. One earns trust; the other destroys it.

How Is NLP Applied in Business & Leadership?
Where NLP earns its keep. How executives, founders, and sales leaders use these tools when the stakes are real and the room isn’t forgiving.
How is NLP applied in executive leadership and sales?
Boardrooms don’t care about techniques — they care about outcomes. NLP in business means staying composed when everyone around you is reactive, asking the precise question that cuts through thirty minutes of corporate waffle in ten seconds, and handling objections without sounding like you’re reading from a playbook. It’s state management under fire. It’s the difference between people choosing to follow you and people feeling cornered into saying yes. It’s the operating system behind leaders who perform under pressure rather than despite it.
