The question of whether NLP really works has been debated since its development in the 1970s. Some critics highlight the lack of rigorous scientific studies, while many practitioners and clients point to its practical value.

The best way to approach this question is to separate NLP as a “science” from NLP as a set of practical models, tools, and approaches for personal and professional development.

Evidence, Experience, and Application

From a scientific perspective, the evidence base is mixed. NLP is not recognised as a mainstream psychological discipline, and some early claims made for it have been challenged. However, this does not mean NLP has no value. Many individuals — from executives to entrepreneurs to professionals starting out — report significant results when NLP is applied consistently and with clear purpose.

In practice, NLP is best understood as a modelling discipline. It begins with curiosity: what do successful people do differently? How do they think, communicate, and act? These patterns can then be modelled, refined, and taught to others. We are always delighted by how quickly people improve when they set a clear direction, take at least small daily actions, and check in regularly with those around them — asking for both feedback and feed-forward. This practical cycle of direction, action, and reflection makes NLP a powerful enabler of growth.

From my experience, NLP works most effectively when clients take responsibility, treat development as an adventure, and commit to applying what they learn. Whether improving communication, setting direction, or developing resilience, NLP offers an adaptable toolkit.

These themes are also central to our NLP Master Practitioner Training, where clients go beyond techniques to model excellence and integrate NLP into real-world contexts.
