Confirmation Bias: The Strategic Blind Spot
Confirmation Bias is the powerful tendency to seek out, interpret, favour, and recall information that confirms or supports one’s prior beliefs or values. This isn’t just a personal quirk; it’s a strategic blind spot that prevents executives and entrepreneurs from seeing the reality needed for sound, objective decision-making.
In leadership, this bias is corrosive. If a CEO believes a market strategy will work, their entire mental map unconsciously filters information to confirm that belief, ignoring crucial data that predicts failure. Our work in Premium 1:1 NLP Training targets the mental maps that create this bias, ensuring you gain the objective perspective needed to achieve your North Star goals.

The Three Ways We Justify Flawed Strategy
The uncomfortable tension of cognitive dissonance compels us to find resolution. This usually manifests in one of three ways, all of which compromise objectivity:
- Change the Behaviour: The individual stops engaging in the dissonant activity. (e.g., A smoker stops smoking.) This is the most challenging route but leads to growth.
- Change the Belief: The individual modifies or downplays the conflicting belief. (e.g., A poor strategist says, “That failed project wasn’t that important, anyway.”)
- Add New Cognitions: The individual adds entirely new thoughts to rationalise the action. (e.g., “Yes, the strategy failed, but at least we learned something invaluable, so it was worth the sunk cost.”)
In a corporate environment, this last form of justification is particularly destructive, leading to the infamous sunk cost fallacy, where resources are continually poured into a failing venture to avoid admitting the initial decision was wrong.
Confirmation Bias in the Boardroom: Symptoms of a Flawed Map
For high-level professionals, this bias is not just a personal problem—it’s a systemic risk. It explains why:
- Failed Strategies Persist: Executives may ignore clear market feedback when it conflicts with a costly, long-term strategic decision they championed. The dissonance of “I am smart” vs. “My strategy is failing” is resolved by finding evidence that the market is “wrong.”
- Talent is Misjudged: Leaders often dismiss feedback from a subordinate they dislike or have unfairly passed over for promotion, rationalising their negative view to maintain mental consistency.
- The Status Quo is Defended: It takes enormous courage to face the dissonance created by admitting that years of previous work or foundational business beliefs are now obsolete.
For high-level professionals, cognitive dissonance is not just a personal problem—it’s a systemic risk… Correcting this systemic risk requires the NLP Master Practitioner Program. Find more foundational concepts and structures in the NLP Techniques List.
