Maximum Willpower: How to master the new science of self-control

Maximum Willpower by Kelly McGonigal (Author)

“Maximum Willpower: How to Master the New Science of Self-Control” by Kelly McGonigal is a comprehensive guide that delves into the science of self-control and willpower. McGonigal, a renowned psychologist, combines the latest research with practical insights to help readers understand and enhance their willpower. The book begins by exploring the idea that willpower is like a muscle – it can be strengthened with practice but also gets fatigued with overuse. McGonigal explains the biological and psychological mechanisms behind self-control, including the role of the prefrontal cortex and the impact of stress and glucose levels on willpower. She debunks common myths and provides evidence to show that willpower is not just an innate trait but a skill that can be developed and improved.

In the second part of the book, McGonigal offers a wealth of strategies and exercises to boost willpower. She emphasizes the importance of setting clear, attainable goals and breaking them into manageable steps. The book highlights how understanding and managing internal triggers, like cravings and emotional responses, is crucial for self-control. McGonigal also discusses the significance of mindfulness and self-compassion in maintaining willpower, suggesting that being too harsh on oneself can actually undermine self-control efforts. Additionally, she addresses the role of social and environmental factors, illustrating how they can both support and challenge our willpower. By the end of “Maximum Willpower,” readers are equipped with a deeper understanding of the science of self-control and practical tools to enhance their willpower, making it easier to achieve their personal and professional goals.

We can use our NLP approaches to apply the ideas in this book

Highly recommended, gives the research to the reason many NLP techniques work. Be aware of what we will, what we won’t and what we want.

Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You

Peaks and Valleys by Spencer Johnson

This not an NLP book as such, but for me, this story gets over many of the principles of NLP, Marshall Goldsmith and Ray Dalio and it’s one of my overall top book recommendations.

“Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You” by Spencer Johnson is a motivational book that offers insights into managing life’s ups and downs effectively. The book is structured as a parable about a young man living in a valley, who meets an older, wiser man living on a peak. This narrative style makes the book’s lessons approachable and relatable. The central theme revolves around the metaphor of ‘peaks’ and ‘valleys’ representing the good and bad times in life. Johnson emphasizes that these periods are not just random occurrences but opportunities for personal growth and understanding. The peaks symbolize moments of success and happiness, while the valleys represent challenges and difficulties. The author conveys that understanding and managing these times effectively can lead to a more fulfilled and balanced life.

The book offers practical strategies for navigating through life’s peaks and valleys. One of the key messages is the importance of learning from the bad times (valleys) to appreciate and sustain the good times (peaks). Johnson advises that during valleys, one should be reflective, stay grounded, and learn from the experience, while during peaks, it’s crucial to stay humble, appreciate what one has, and prepare for future valleys. The book also stresses the significance of maintaining perspective, stating that the way one views a situation can transform its impact and outcome. Another important lesson is the value of making reality-based decisions and taking small, consistent steps towards change, rather than being paralyzed by fear or complacency. Overall, “Peaks and Valleys” is not just about surviving the lows and enjoying the highs, but about using both to achieve a more consistent and enduring state of contentment and success.

Peaks and Valleys
Peaks and Valleys

Summary from the book, –

TO MANAGE YOUR GOOD AND BAD TIMES:

Make Reality Your Friend

Whether you are temporarily up on a Peak or down in a Valley, ask yourself: What is the truth in this situation?

TO GET OUT OF A VALLEY SOONER:

Find And Use The Good Hidden In A Bad Time

Relax, knowing that Valleys end. Do the opposite of what put you in the Valley. Get outside of yourself: be of more service at work and more loving in life. Avoid comparisons. Uncover the good that is hidden in a bad time, and use it soon to your advantage.

TO STAY ON A PEAK LONGER:

Appreciate and Manage Your Good Times Wisely

Be humble and grateful. Do more of what got you there. Keep making things better. Do more for others. Save resources for your upcoming Valleys.

TO GET TO YOUR NEXT PEAK:

Follow Your Sensible Vision

Imagine yourself enjoying a better future in such specific, believable detail, that you soon enjoy doing what takes you there.

TO HELP PEOPLE:

Share It With Others!

Help people make good and bad times work for them, too.

The Master Seducer’s Handbook: Secrets of the Art of Smooth Seduction

Happy

Happy: Why More or Less Everything is Absolutely Fine

A journey through all the approaches to lead a fulfilled life – Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Epicureans, the Stoics, Christianity, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the romantics, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, right up to today.

Happy
Happy

From AmazonEveryone says they want to be happy. But that’s much more easily said than done. What does being happy actually mean? And how do you even know when you feel it?

In “Happy” Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness – from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. He shows how many of self-help’s suggested routes to happiness and success – such as positive thinking, self-belief and setting goals – can be disastrous to follow and, indeed, actually cause anxiety.

Happy aims to reclaim happiness and to enable us to appreciate the good things in life, in all their transient glory. By taking control of the stories we tell ourselves, by remembering that ‘everything’s fine’ even when it might not feel that way, we can allow ourselves to flourish and to live more happily.

The Art of Happiness

The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living

Written by psychiatrist Howard C Cutler and based on conversations with the Dalai Lama, this is a great companion to the Derren Brown book. Appreciate more what we already have as well as what we still want. Life includes pain and suffering, so develop the disciplines to make these easier to deal with. Happiness is our birth right if we work for it.

He calls them atomic habits.

Win Bigly

Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don’t Matter

How Trump won. A book that explores hypnotic principles and how we can significantly become more influential when we use them. (Assuming we want to!)

Win Bigly
Win Bigly

From Amazon – If you watched the entire election cycle and concluded that Trump was nothing but a lucky clown, you missed one of the most important perceptual shifts in the history of humankind. I’ll fix that for you in this book.   Adams was one of the earliest public figures to predict Trump’s win, doing so a week after Nate Silver put Trump’s odds at 2 percent in his FiveThirtyEight.com blog.

The mainstream media regarded Trump as a novelty and a sideshow. But Adams recognized in Trump a level of persuasion you only see once in a generation.   Trump triggered massive cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias on both the left and the right. We’re hardwired to respond to emotion, not reason.

We might listen to 10 percent of a speech-a hand gesture here, a phrase there-and if the right buttons are pushed, we decide we agree with the speaker and invent reasons to justify that decision after the fact.   The point isn’t whether Trump was right or wrong, good or bad. Win Bigly goes beyond politics to look at persuasion tools that can work in any setting-the same ones Adams saw in Steve Jobs when he invested in Apple decades ago.

For instance:   If you need to convince people that something is important, make a claim that’s directionally accurate but has a big exaggeration in it. Everyone will spend endless hours talking about how wrong it is and will remember the issue as high priority.

Stop wasting time on elaborate presentation preparations. Inside, you’ll learn which components of your messaging matter, and where you can wing it. Planting simple, sticky ideas (such as Crooked Hillary) is more powerful than stating facts. Just find a phrase without previous baggage that grabs your audience at an emotional level.

Adams offers nothing less than access to the admin passwords to human beings. This is a must read if you care about persuading others in any field-or if you just want to resist the tactics of emotional persuasion when they’re used on you.

If we’re not careful, loserthink would have us believe that every Trump supporter is a bigoted racist, addicts should be responsible for fixing the opioid epidemic, and that your relationship fell apart simply because you chewed with your mouth open. Even the smartest people can slip into loserthink’s seductive grasp. This book will teach you how to spot and avoid it-andd will give you scripts to respond when Hollow arguments are being brandished against you, whether by well-intentioned friends, strangers on the Internet, or political pundits. A practical (and research based) approach to increasing our luck. This book is highly recommended.

The Luck Factor
The Luck Factor

From Amazon – Why do some people lead happy successful lives whilst other face repeated failure and sadness? Why do some find their perfect partner whilst others stagger from one broken relationship to the next? What enables some people to have successful careers whilst others find themselves trapped in jobs they detest? And can unlucky people do anything to improve their luck – and lives?

Ten years ago, Professor Richard Wiseman decided to search for the elusive luck factor by investigating the actual beliefs and experiences of lucky and unlucky people. The results reveal a radical new way of looking at luck: in many important ways, we make our own luck. If you think you’re unlucky, that bad luck may be the direct result of you believing you’re unlucky.

Wiseman identifies the four simple behavioural techniques that have been scientifically proven to help you attract good fortune. He then shows how you can use these methods to revolutionise every area of your life – including your relationships, personal finances and career.
